こんにちはみんな！ Here is another anime post about two series that are strictly focused on student councils in high school. While they hold responsibility among the school, in these two anime series we see how strange they can get, to the point of having a WTF moment. Both series are similar in which there is one guy among the student council girls and how randomly random it gets. Anyways, onto the post!
First off we take a look at the anime Seitokai no Ichizon, which is in general about a high school student council. The council is composed of four girls who were chosen by a popularity contest. The main character, Sugisaki Ken, got the final position by studying hard to have top grades. His reason for trying so hard to get into the council is to have a harem of girls, which they despise him for. It’s a slice of life comedy series so there is no real plot but riddled with parodies from other works and animes like Metal Gear, Death Note, K-On!, etc.
The characters themselves are not bad. Sugisaki Ken is the blue chip seat vice president who had to get top grades to get into the student council. Though he is intent on having a harem and seems like a pervert, is hardworking and really does care about others in a good way, even doing the main student council work at night by himself that they get lazy to do during the day. Kurimu Sakurano is the president of the student council. She is small, has a sweet tooth, and is generally lazy. She always tries to get the council to get stuff done but usually fails. Chizuru Akaba is the Secretary of the Student Council who is tall and beautiful but sometimes has a sadistic nature, though has shown to have a cute side when hopping around dressed as a sheep. Minatsu Shiina is the second vice president (Don’t know why there are two) who is a tomboy who is into shonen anime and manga. Mafuyu Shiina is the younger sister of Shiina and is the Student Council Treasurer. She is a hardcore gamer and is also into BL or yaoi. While she is afraid of men, she is ok around Sugisaki, even telling him once that she loves him. For some reason she is my favorite of all the main characters.
This was quite a funny anime series, but its impact is limited in some ways by how they seem to stay in the student council room all the time and how annoying sometimes Sugisaki can get with his harem phase. What I enjoyed the most out of this anime was the parodies, which in this anime are way more direct than any anime that has parodies has. In Lucky Star and Hayate no Gotoku, they tend to either blur our images from other anime works or bleep out words that are copyrighted. In Seitokai no Ichizon, the parodies are like directly from the source that you think how did they do this without copyright problems? For example there was a parody scene from strike witches that is almost parallel to the real thing. (See the video) Also there was a Metal Gear parody that made me lol so much. (See the video) Well I’m sure the creators knew what they were doing. It was a good watch but I was mainly using it to waste some time until some of the animes I really wanted to watch started.
Seitokai Yakuindomo is another anime series that focuses on the activities of the student council. It is also a slice of life comedy series that has one boy among three girls. The difference is that the main male character Takatoshi Tsuda is a your everyday normal male who gets forced to join the student council as vice president and male representative of the school as it was recently an all girls school. Here is a synopsis of Seitokai Yakuindomo from MAL.net:
“Tsuda Takatoshi is about to begin his first year in Ousai Academy. His decision to enter Ousai was based upon it being close to his home and he paid no heed to the fact he’d be among the first boys to enter the recently gender-integrated school.
On his first trip to school, Takatoshi is surrounded by girls; the train has nothing but girls, the walk to school has nothing but girls and once he finally arrives he is approached by a group of girls and summarily appointed vice-president of the student council and, as expected, he is the only boy there.
Now Takatoshi finds himself surrounded by crazy girls who do nothing but horrify him with their candid conversations about feminine hygiene products and, what’s worse, assume he’s the worst kind of man, the kind who doesn’t clean himself and watches porn all day long.”
Tsuda Takatoshi is the vice president of the student council who was forced to join on his first day of school. He eventually gets a hang of his job and gets used to the strange talk the girls have, though tries to intervene if things are too much. He even gets too used to the strange talk that at one point finds it odd when they are not talking about inappropriate things. Shino Amakusa, voiced by Yōko Hikasa, is the student council president. She has great grades and talents but is also very perverted and curious about stuff related. She looks similar to Mio Akiyama from K-On! and both characters have the same seiyuu. I find it really weird when I imagine Shino as Mio because they are almost complete opposites in terms of personally. Aria Shichijō is part of the student council and Shino’s best friend. She is voiced by Satomi Sato. She has that ojo-sama air-headed personally and is equally perverted like Shino. Suzu Hagimura is the last member of the student council. She is very short which she doesn’t like people mentioning, even refusing help when her height is a problem. Unlike the other two girls, she’s a normal girl who works hard in the student council. She is seen a lot with Tsuda because both of them can’t handle Shino and Aria’s conversations. She also uses him for help when her height is too much of a problem. Almost all the other minor characters are perverted in some ways as well like Naruko Yokoshima, who is in charge of the student council. She is lazy and has perverted thoughts about the younger male students.
I liked this series better than Seitokai no Ichizon because Tsuda is a normal person among weird girls who seem to talk about sex and stuff related so openly that it makes you have that WTF moment almost all the time you’re watching it. Even though the stuff they talk about is really not appropriate, there is not much in terms of fan service, something that you would expect from this anime. Anything that should be censored is censored but I’m sure there is a way around it.
Both series were funny in their own way, but were minor anime series to me. You know, watching too much anime that has no plot can get boring fast. Well I was using them to kill time until the new seasons of the anime I’ve been waiting for to start, start. Currently I’m watching animes that have some plot, something refreshing if you ask me.
