Main Characters from left to right: Dead Master/Yomi Takanashi and Mato Kuroi/Black Rock Shooter

I said I was going to do two posts a month and this is post number two of July. A bit late as it’s the last day of the month but it’s better than nothing.

I heard of Black Rock Shooter a few months ago but didn’t think much of it. I kept on hearing a lot about it though from my favorite blogging website dannychoo.com, so I looked into a bit more. The concept of Black Rock Shooter came from a Japanese music group Supercell creating a song using the Vocaloid singing voice synthesizer program. Even the main character’s looks is based on Miku Hatsune. The song was posted on the Japanese video sharing website Nico Nico Douga which became very popular, getting a couple of million views. Eventually the popularity of the song got enough attention for it to be turned into an anime OVA which aired July 24, 2010.

First, here is the plot of the OVA, taken from wikipedia:

“Black Rock Shooter begins at the start of the school year in April. On her first day of junior high school, Mato Kuroi (黒衣 マト, Kuroi Mato, Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa) makes friends with a girl named Yomi Takanashi (小鳥遊 ヨミ, Takanashi Yomi, Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro) who recently moved to the town. Mato quickly joins the basketball club, which incites Yomi to join the volleyball club since both clubs practice at the same time in the gymnasium. The two spend much time together over the following year, and during one outing Mato gives Yomi the same cellphone charm she has. In their second year of junior high, they end up in different classes, reducing the amount of time they can spend together. Furthermore, Yomi starts to become jealous of Mato hanging around her basketball club manager and classmate Yuu (ユウ, Voiced by: Kana Asumi).

When Yomi seemingly disappears, Mato becomes concerned when she does not show up at school the next day or respond to her text messages. Mato becomes further depressed when she receives word that Yomi has been reported missing and is asked about her whereabouts by two detectives. One day, Mato receives a blank text message from Yomi and goes to her favorite spot in town where she finds the phone charm she gave her. The charm starts to glow and transports her to a strange world where she meets a mysterious girl named Black Rock Shooter (ブラック★ロックシューター, Burakku Rokku Shūtā), who has a blazing blue left eye and a rock canon which can fire 20 shots per second. Mato merges with Black Rock Shooter in order to save Yomi who was possessed by an evil being called Dead Master (デッドマスター, Deddo Masutā), who weilds a large scythe. The events of their lengthy battle are dispersed throughout the animation. In the end, Mato manages to destroy the evil possessing Yomi by embracing her with a hug. The two return to their normal lives, but Yuu begins to act strangely.”

I didn’t really know what the story was about before watching the OVA. I didn’t look up the lyrics of the song but did see the pilot videos on YouTube and had a different take on what the story was based on those videos. I thought that the story of the show was that the Dead Master was actually Black Rock Shooter’s sister and that BRS had to destroy her sister due to her becoming an evil entity. It seemed like a sad thing and made it interesting to look forward to watch. That was what I thought it was about. What it was in reality was that Yomi was her friend from school that became evil apparently due to her becoming jealous of Mato’s new friend she made at school when Mato and Yomi were in different classes in their second year. To me, I thought the original story that I thought it was going to be was way better than what it really was, that BRS had to destroy Dead Master even though it was her sister that turned evil due to unknown circumstances.

The OVA itself was still good to watch, though its very typical of an anime. School life but with the twist of the Black Rock Shooter world with pretty cool fight scenes. I still enjoyed watching the OVA but expected a better plot after all the exposure and advertisement the anime got for the past few months. Still it seems that the project may not be over yet due to there being more characters announced than shown in the OVA. For now I hope the BRS project improves.

The thing is how can you fit everything in 50mins? some people dont understand that =/
of course you cant and so thats why they had to skip parts making bits unexplained or confusing. im hoping this will lead to a sequel like TV series so that then we can have you bg story.
OVA’s like this cant be masterpiece but BRS turned out to be good in the general picture. Im glad to find someone else liking it =)
